Ace Your Next Telephone Interview
A solid resume is no longer the first thing that will land you an in-person interview. An extra hurdle has been added to the job search process. Today, the interviewing stage usually begins with a telephone interview, Skype interview, or even both. The goal of your remote interview should always be to land an onsite one. Unfortunately you will not always get the option to schedule your phone interview, but in the instance that you do, we’ve listed tips for before, during, and after to get you through the next phase!
BEFORE:
- Print out copies of the job description, your resume, and application.
- Have a short list of your professional accomplishments handy.
- Research the company, beyond their own website.
- Prepare your interview questions in advance.
- Practice by having a mock phone interview with a trusted individual.
- Record your mock interview so that you can hear how you sound on the phone and fix any negative conversational habits.
- Remember to design your questions as a way to learn more about the company and to also be sure the actual position is a good fit for you.
- Prepare your surroundings, just as you would for a Skype interview and make sure the room is void of distractions.
- Be sure to let the people you live with know about your interview in advance to avoid disruption.
- Have a pen and paper handy for taking notes.
DURING:
- Usually the interviewer will set the stage first and start off by explaining some of the expectations. Listen and don’t interrupt.
- Take notes as the interviewer speaks so that you can reflect back when it’s your turn to talk.
- Smile during your interview. Even though the person on the other end won’t be able to see you, this will impact the tone of your voice and help you to project a positive image.
- Speak slowly and enunciate clearly.
- It’s okay to take a moment or two to collect your thoughts.
- End the call on a positive note by explaining that you are confident about the role and still interested in the position.
- Before hanging up, be sure to ask about the next steps of the interviewing process, confirm you have the proper contact information, and thank the interviewer.
AFTER:
- Send a thank-you note!
