Mary H. Took a Quickbooks Class to Land Her New Job
Mary enrolled in one of our Quickbooks courses to help her get up to speed for a new career opportunity. She had prior experience using similar software, but needed some experience with this specific program, so she could shine in her new role. Below, Mary shares her course experience:
I have worked in libraries for over 11 years and recently started a new Office Manager position at Sycamore Public Library. I have worked with several accounting software systems but I have never used Quickbooks.
I had been out of work (full time) for over a year when a friend saw the job posting and suggested I apply at Sycamore. I have always loved the town of Sycamore and loved their library, but I was hesitant, because Sycamore wanted Quickbook experience. I had taken a class in Quickbooks but never got to actually use it in the workforce.
At my interview I was honest in saying that I have experience in accounting and human resources, but have taken a Quickbooks class and never actually used it in the work environment. I felt good about my interview, though I was uncertain if they would consider me due to this.
Just when my life was hitting rock bottom, I got a call from the director at the library who offered me the position. After I hung up I started to cry. My nightmare was over. I was so excited to get the job and couldn’t wait to start. But that fear and uncertainty of Quickbooks worried me.
A friend of mine who is an accountant got me the book “Bookkeeping for Dummies.” She said she didn’t know Quickbooks but she thought this book would help. I went to my library and checked out 3 Quickbook books to read and study. As my first day approached, I was so scared and nervous.
I was going to get training from a temp, but I don’t learn well from watching others; I learn better from doing.
After the accountant left, I had so many questions, and it was just me and the library director, so she suggested I take the ed2go Quickbooks class.
I liked that I could actually do what the book/program was telling me. I could practice. And whereas I can’t remember everything, I learned a lot. I printed out my course information and created my Quickbooks binder. Once I completed the class, took the final, and got an A, I printed out my grade and gave it to the director. I was so excited. I asked to take the next level class.
The only thing I wish the program would offer is a chance to ask questions in your own situation. This is where I run into problems. I use the Quickbook help feature but sometimes it is not enough. The ed2go program is very clear and helpful, so I think the instructor could help in many ways.
I am excited to be working again. I am excited to learn about a program which I didn’t know much about, but mostly I am thrilled that my friend believed in me – that I could learn this program which encouraged me to apply for this job.
Thank you,
Mary H.
