Thomasina Shares Her ed2go Story
Thomasina M. made a huge career transition after obtaining a degree and career in journalism. Here’s her story of how she transitioned into the healthcare industry with her medical billing and coding course:
I am currently studying Medical Billing and Coding, which I never thought I would do! After completing my undergrad degree in journalism and working as a reporter, I never would’ve seen myself working in the medical field, let alone looking up codes for medical conditions and making sure insurance forms were properly filled out.
After going through a quarter-life crisis (yes, it happens; I have learned to embrace I’m not going to be a movie star), I decided I needed to switch my mindset. ed2go is helping me achieve my goal of working in the medical field and helping others in need, without forcing me to retake freshman chemistry (this pipette goes where?)
The best part of this course is that it is flexible, and it has inspired me to learn more about my new career path. Before, I thought that working in a hospital was something I could never do, because I’m not scientifically-inclined; however, this course has helped me realize I have other talents, like problem-solving, that can help me become an excellent coder and biller. It’s really opened doors for me and made me excited to learn again.
Because of this program, I’m volunteering at a local hospital. I was inspired by my studies to learn more about the inner workings of a hospital and how I can use my skills to make patients and their family members more at ease during their often-stressful time at the hospital. I know I have support from my instructor, who always answers my questions promptly, and once I finish the course, I will have guidance from professional coding organizations, as well.
Overall, this course has helped me concentrate on my skills by helping me think outside the box as to how I can use them best in a growing job field. By showing me that I can do many things and that I have support from my instructor, I’m confident that once I finish the course and become certified, I will not only find a job, but I will work in a field that encourages me to constantly challenge myself.
